Global Development and Colonial Power: Kilombo: International Relations and Colonial Questions

Autor Daniel Bendix
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 15 mar 2018
Despite Germany being the European Union's largest, and the world's third largest, aid donor as well as one of the principal colonising nations in Africa, there is no literature on the (post)colonial condition of German development policy. This book questions this by exploring German endeavours by state institutions as well as secular and faith-based NGOs, and provides evidence of development policy's unacknowledged entanglement in colonial modes of thought and practice. It zooms in on the under-researched case of the world's third-largest donor, and on concrete policies and practices in selected fields of intervention: development education and billboard advertising/fundraising in Germany, and obstetric care and population control in Tanzania and the Global South. It argues that colonial continuities in development, which perpetuate inequality and injustice which development policy claims to fight, need to be understood as functioning through the transnational character of development policy at home and abroad.
