God's Army, 1096 Anno Domini

In the spring of 1096, Jerome is a young, naive scribe in the Kingdom of the Franks. His religious devotion convinces him to join the pope's campaign to free Jerusalem from the Muslim Turks. Together with his father and brother, Jerome sets out for Vienna to join God's Army, a host of fifty thousand peasants.

The disorganized army leaves Vienna and travels through Hungary. A battle erupts in the town of Semlin that results in thousands of Hungarians slaughtered. God's army scatters into the countryside of Bulgaria to flee retribution, but it finds them. Eventually they are escorted to Constantinople. Jerome and his father find favor among the Byzantine court. In Anatolia internal strife erupts among the men of God's Army. Will the group be torn apart? Is it even possible to reach Jerusalem?
