The Divan of Ḥāfiẓ inspired Goethe's West- stlicher Divan and writings of other nineteenth-century German thinkers. But scholarship to date has neglected to delineate the broader lines of similarity between Ḥāfiẓ's and Goethe's respective intellectual worlds. This study attempts to remedy that gap and provide a basis for future scholarship on Ḥāfiẓ's reception among orientalists and philosophers.
