In December 2011, after seven years of marriage, my wife and I separated and I faced the realization that, following the divorce, I might not be seeing my son very often. I was suddenly very aware of the sand in the hourglass running out and I knew we were both losing a wonderful opportunity to grow older together, to share some of life's best moments and for us to get to know one another better. More than anything, I feared he might not come to know me as well as I'd hoped and I didn't want him to grow up not knowing me on a truly personal level. As a result, I started to write these stories. From growing up and working in England, right through to emigrating to the US, marriage, divorce and our last shared days together. Music was my inspiration. Whenever I heard a song, or a piece of music, that reminded me of something or someone, or of the events of that day, I would write the story behind the song. Through three years of hurt, hope, love lost and love found, surgery and autism, I wrote those stories. Ultimately, despite it all, my son and I became closer as a result. That's all I need for a good life.
