Ham Radio is Alive and Well, is about 21st century ham radio. It is a collection of Gary's observations, experiences, and thoughts, between the time he re-entered the hobby in 2010 and now. It is about what he refers to as "traditional" ham radio; the stuff hams did and continue to do using HF (high frequency) transceivers, antenna tuners, wire and/or beam antennas, working DX, QSLing and contesting. It is about what he remembers from the past, and what is currently happening in the field of ham radio today. Ham radio buffs, and anyone who has ever considered getting a ham radio license, will discover the hobby is not dead, but thriving and actually GROWING If you enjoyed reading 200 Meters & Down, or The World of Ham Radio, 1901-1950, you will find this book absolutely intriguing. Gary compares present day amateur radio to what he recollects from when he originally entered the hobby in the 1960s. He does a good job in sharing what he has learned in recent years, and explains how ham radio has evolved and lived-on amidst smartphones, PCs, and the Internet. You will find some "How to..." information within the text, but this work should not be considered a training or ham radio license manual. The ARRL (American Radio Relay League) publishes plenty of those. Here and there, Gary manages to insert bits and pieces of history, as well as a little humor, all intermixed among the various wireless communications topics. This transcript is a must read for any inactive licensed radio amateur. The Technician class licensee who wants to learn more about the hobby and why he or she should forge ahead towards a higher-class license will also want to read this.
