Hiding deep in his cerebral closet, locked in a state of confusion, Chris slips away from reality to avoid a vital decision. He must choose whether to reveal his true self and risk losing what he loves the most; his family, his friends, his scouting life and his religion, or continue to hide and possibly lose his mind. Set against the backdrop of a deteriorating, New Orleans public school, Happy Phase takes us into the mind of a teenager who has realized that he is what society has taught him to scorn. This, coupled with the pressures of adolescent life, lands Chris in a state of depression. Luckily, he has a devoted gang of friends to ridicule him, entangle him in mischief, and introduce him to the aid of mind-numbing substances. Of course, these solutions are only temporary. Between the episodes of delinquency and intoxication, his demons continue to surface, leading him to the edge of a perilous cliff.
