REUVEN GAL, previously chief psychologist of the Israeli DefenseForces, has also served as a combat officer in the IDF and retiredwith the rank of colonel. He received his BA and MA degrees inpsychology at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and his PhD fromthe University of California, Berkeley. Dr Gal has served as asenior research associate at Walter Reed Army Institute of Researchin Washington DC and as a visiting professor in military educationat Boston University. He is currently the director of the IsraeliInstitute for Military Studies, and teaches military psychology atthe IDF s Staff and Command School. He has published articles onbehavior under stress, military psychology, heroism in combat, andrelated subjects in many academic journals, and has published threeprevious books in the area of military psychology.
A. DAVID MANGELSDORFF received his BA from Dartmouth College, MAand PhD degrees in psychology from the University of Delaware, MAin English from St. Mary s University of San Antonio, Texas, and anMPH degree from the University of Texas School of Public Health. Heis a fellow of both the American Psychological Association and theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science. DrMangelsdorff is an adjunct professor at the University of TexasSchool of Public Health and a clinical assistant professor offamily practice at the Uniformed Services University of the HealthSciences. He serves as associate editor (clinical/health) for thejournal Military Psychology and on the editorial board of theJournal of Traumatic Stress. His research areas include stress, disasters, health psychology, and retention factors. He remainsactive in the Army reserves as the psychology staff officer forHeadquarters, Health Services Command.
