The beautiful, the famous, the good, the pioneers and the intellect. Such descriptive terms describe William Kuykendall's portrayal account of African-American women through poetry. Educators, musicians, scientists, entertainers, specialists and historical characters are the varied categories. As one who has lived for over eight decades, Kuykendall wants to pay his personal tribute to African-American women. Many in this collection are very well known. Others, like Ida B. Wells-Barnett, deserve a place in black history for their many roles. Ms. Barnett is honored for her contribution to journalism and being an advocate to the poor. Many African-American women, like Marian Wright Edelman, didn't wait around for a role model to pursue a passion or to do what needed to be done. Kuykendall has endeavored to tell the story of the lives of African-American women in poetic form. He wants to acknowledge their accomplishments.
