Settlement life was extremely difficult after the end of the Civil War and medical care, transportation, and the tools of daily living were primitive. A family had to be truly self-sufficient, commited and very determined to survive. Young Olivia loved her family and the country life she had been born into, but she would have to make many heartbreaking decisions during her short lifetime.
