Hermeneutics

Autor Edited by Paul F. Kisak
en Limba Engleză Paperback
Hermeneutics is the theory and methodology of text interpretation, especially the interpretation of biblical texts, wisdom literature, and philosophical texts. The word itself is derived from the Greek god Hermes who was regarded as the messenger of the gods. The early usage of "hermeneutics" places it within the boundaries of the sacred. A divine message must be received with implicit uncertainty regarding its truth. This ambiguity is an irrationality; it is a sort of madness that is inflicted upon the receiver of the message. Only one who possesses a rational method of interpretation (i.e., a hermeneutic) could determine the truth or falsity of the message. Hermeneutics was initially applied to the interpretation, or exegesis, of scripture. It emerged as a theory of understanding. Exegesis focuses primarily upon texts. Modern hermeneutics includes both verbal and non-verbal communication as well as semiotics, presuppositions, prejudice and the bias that is inherent in all literature. The purpose of this series of books on religion, mythology and theology is designed to illuminate the necessity to emphasize our common humanity and eliminate the battles and divisiveness that exist within the ongoing religious struggles. This book is designed to be a reference and provide an overview of the topic and give the reader a structured knowledge to familiarize yourself with the topic at the most affordable price possible. The accuracy and knowledge is of an international viewpoint as the edited articles represent the inputs of many knowledgeable individuals and some of the most current knowledge on the topic, based on the date of publication.
