In the 1940s Walter Gunther, age 14, was reunited with his mother in Mt Vernon NY after living in an orphanage for most of his life. That life was recounted in the book YOU DON'T BELONG HERE ANYMORE But now, where did Gunther belong? His next fourteen years of life was a series of new school, life, and social adventures in his adjustment to the outside world. This sequel, HEY GUNTHER WHY ARE YOU HERE? explores the various 'here's. In the late 40's when less than 10% of high school graduates attended college, Gunther enrolled at the University of Alaska during its territorial status. Alaska Why that far off place? How did he earn college money before and during his enrollment? At home, jobs and a small business helped. In Alaska, summer employment on a Yukon River freighter, a summer at McKinley Hotel, a job on the ALCAN highway and other construction jobs around Fairbanks were necessary. Campus jobs and being a barber also helped. College life had its adventures with "DRAINO" and the Sourdough Club among many other activities meant to dampen cabin fever. Gunther's mother arrives in Alaska. What role did she play in her son's adventures?
