According to Sifakis' "Compendium,"Hardie's Battalion of cavalry reserves was organized with only 5 companies on 7 Sept 1864, Joseph Hardie began the war in command of the Alabama 4th Infantry. He resigned in 1860 and returned to Talladega where he organized Hardie's Battalion of Alabama Cavalry Reserves with six or seven companies. He assumed the rank of captain and served as the commanding officer. He was later promoted to Major. Among the members ofHardie's Battalion were E.H. Also in the Talladega area at the time was a new company of cavalry which Andrew Bowie had raised when he resigned in May 1862 from his original company.
