The Alabama 63rd Infantry Regiment was organized at Blakeley, in July 1864, and nearly all of the men except two companies ("A'' and "B") were conscripts from various parts of the State, the officers being mostly veterans. This unit was formerly the Alabama 2nd Infantry Regiment Reserves. Company I was made up of men from the Alabama 3rd Infantry Regiment Reserves. The regiment remained in the defenses of Mobile till ordered to Spanish Fort, three days before the place was invested, March 1865. It was, with the Sixty-second, a part of Gen. Thomas' brigade, and lost several killed and wounded during the first six days' operations at Spanish Fort.
