Textul de pe ultima copertă

The United Nations estimated that as of December 2004, 39.4 million people worldwide were living with HIV, which included 17.6 million women and 2.2 million children under the age of 15.This volume represents the collective efforts of twenty five of the Florida/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC) faculty and thirty seven guest authors. The faculty represent a diverse group of HIV care providers. This guide consisting of over forty chapters is organized into six sections covering HIV and AIDS care and treatment of the child, adolescent, and adult. The text is targeted for the front-line clinician and is designed to allow for the rapid identification of practical treatment information. Strategies for treatment continually change as new drugs are regularly approved and new drug interactions are identified. The US Department of Health and Human Services has published 42 different treatment guidelines since 1998. There are multiple opportunistic infections and co-existing conditions that clinicians are challenged to prevent, evaluate, and treat. The complexity and chronic nature of HIV disease requires clinicians to know how to individualize care for each patient and as the patients are living longer, new issues are arising. The wide range of available treatment options, the high pill burden, and strict requirements for consistent adherence to medication regimens present unique treatment challenges. Although this volume contains the most up-to-date date and information available, it should be recognized that these rapid changes compel the reader to consult with their local experts or research the literature for the latest information to assist in individual treatment decisions for their patient. This volume will provide a much needed information datebase for this field.
