Since the first British submarine, Holland 1, Plymouth has been a base for the fleet. From the early years of the twentieth century, Defiance has played an important part in the history of British submarines. Defiance is the only site in the UK equipped to conduct nuclear submarine refits, including those for the Vanguard class.
