Having always been an active person, the author couldn't understand what was happening to her. She could no longer walk or stand for any length of time. Even sitting became a problem. Being out of work with no insurance and no money for a doctor, it was a while before she would be able to find out what was going on. When she finally able to see a doctor, the diagnosis wasn't good. She had Rheumatoid Arthritis. Even though the shock was great, her first thought was "I'm not taking the drugs."
