Extras
You could not meet Otto and Marguerite even briefly without immediately being pulled into the charm of their incredible energy for living. They were two people who simply bubbled over with joy in every waking moment and in everything in which they were involved.
The Woods were both physically tiny people. Otto was short and, except for a white decorative fringe as a frame, completely bald. He was the fiddle player, but he was so small that, when he pulled out his fiddle, many people thought it was a viola.
Marguerite was even smaller. A tiny bird-like creature, she seemed to trip along with her feet hardly touching the ground. She was the piano player, floating above the piano bench, bent over the keyboard, and always smiling, showing all of her teeth. She played gigantic chords all over the piano to undergird and drive Otto’s melodies.
The Woods quickly and easily became the kind of friends you feel you have known all your life, and I soon found myself consumed by their whole life story.

Textul de pe ultima copertă
Donald Davis, a former Methodist minister, has become one of America’s most-revered traditional storytellers. While Davis has made his name telling coming-of-age stories of his childhood in the Great Smoky Mountains, this seminal volume focuses upon characters who have populated Davis’s life and—he believes—will bring light into readers’ lives. They are the unknown, but to family, who defined dignity, graciousness, and kindness in the author’s eyes. Readers who have followed Davis’s work over the past four decades will glory in these tales of special people who can now be known to all of us.

Recenzii
"This book is a sure cure for cynicism and a remedy for depression. Some of the stories are vintage favorites. Others are classics-in-the-making. Each spotlights a life well lived that remains bright in Davis' memory."
"In How They Linger, Donald Davis looks across the years and remembers the wonderfully quirky, warm-hearted people that make for a rich, full life. Without a doubt, this book will have you recalling people in your own life who deserve to be remembered and kept alive by having their stories told."
"If you've heard him, Donald Davis's voice is unmistakable. How They Linger is a lovely example of "memento morti," as only Donald Davis can do it with his familiar mix of humor, wistfulness, and a deep appreciation for a culture that for many of us has passed into the history of "what was." They are simultaneously a collection of stories he has told from the stage and a set of recollections of people who made a difference in his life that Donald does not want to forget, or have us forget once we have read these chapters."
“The stories Donald Davis writes and tells about his Appalachian heroes and “sheroes” still give me goosebumps. His story sense is remarkable, and his voice comes through with both tenderness and impact.”
“The wonderful Celtic scholar John O’Donahue once said, “Beauty is a homecoming.” Donald Davis is a homecoming. There is nothing, I mean nothing, like witnessing Donald Davis tell a story. This collection takes me closer to that experience than I thought possible. His voice jumps from the page.”
“Heartfelt and hilarious, Donald Davis' How They Linger reminds us how important it is to tell the stories of those who touch our lives. By sharing these precious memories, they truly never die.”
