Written to awaken naive, gullible conservative Christians, particularly Southern Baptists, to the defeats and deprivations imposed by uncritical religious belief, the book demolishes Old Testament literalism, and reveals eight church-committed atrocities that deprive members of contentment and success. It shows that church leaders control their minions with an imprisoning "follow us," and discourage acceptance of Christ's offer of a personal "follow me." The concluding chapter, "Redemption," restores the reader to his God-intended freedom.
