In this volume, Johan Galtung, best known through his highly acclaimed work in peace studies, develops a new approach to human rights. His argument is that the human rights tradition offers significant means to reduce violence in the world, although it needs recasting if it is to achieve this objective effectively. The concept of human rights emerged out of the Western legal tradition and claims to be of universal application. However, the historical and cultural Western imprint on the idea of human rights leads to difficulties, theoretical and political.
