Coveted by popes and kings, it passed through the hands of the Holy Roman Emperors, who finally bequeathed it to the Knights Templar. When they ultimately fell, the Holy Tub and its treasure mysteriously vanished - but not completely. For 800 years, the Sacred Basin would be seen again on rare occasions in brief, eerie ghostlike visions near the tomb of the Templars. One celebrity long obsessed with the Maundy Grail was TV's first scientific showman, Doc MacLantis. He was spectacularly humiliated in a failed effort to find the Holy Tub broadcast live worldwide. So much so that his three grown children would gladly forget the whole thing and get on with their lives, especially Professor Gus MacLantis, an academic archeologist, who has been long embarrassed by his antics. But when Doc suddenly dies immediately after announcing that he would tell all, strange intruders will not let them alone. Not only that, Doc's former colleague and bitter rival, Maestro Fatamorgana, challenges them to defend their father's reputation. So Gus, Skip, and Allie are reluctantly forced to again take up the quest that had consumed their parents. They return to the site of the Holy Tub's disappearance, a cathedral in Southern France. There, at a convention for Maundy Grail mystery fans, Gus must debate Fatamorgana. But they also have to deal with the fans and other seekers, secret groups, and spies - not to mention sex, drugs and rock and roll. Gus meets his former lover again. But his hopes for a tender reconciliation are threatened by her involvement in a strange cult which seeks to recruit both Allie and Skip. The complications build as various other sinister factions seek to enlist them, too. Clues, some real, some fake, lead them on through the town's wonders built by a medieval genius. Stakes are raised when Gus is informed by an undercover agent that the reason Holy Tub is sought by spies and terrorists is that may hold a vial containing Plague germs placed there by that same wizard. Finally, a startling nearly-fatal chance discovery by Skip reveals that the visions may not be miraculous after all. The siblings then have but a single brief chance to settle their differences and work with other seekers and the authorities to solve the mystery and find the Holy Tub. The surprising results lead to a riot, a chase through a graveyard, bloodshed, and a desperate search led by Gus at gunpoint through ancient traps and obstacles. The quest seemingly ends in despair, but in an unexpected twist, the truth is finally revealed. And the world will never be the same - if it survives.
