Descriere

Idolatry is apocalyptic fiction, set in the city of Mumbai in the near future. It is a dreary, anarchic time. Governments and their goals have receded into insignificance. Only the play of money and appetites goes on unthinkingly with a vast profit-making company at the helm, whose core business is advertising.
Society has been riven through by petty wars and social media-driven factions. Now, in the wake of social media, the time is ripe for a new technology. It is called Shrine Tech; a device which enables every user to construct and worship a tailor-made God of their own preference.
We follow a twenty year old unemployed actor, named Saionton, who is hired as a marketing rep by the company which owns Shrine Tech (and a great deal else besides), and has piloted it in India. Saionton is given a list of names of aggrieved Shrine Tech users, apparently to placate. He soon discovers that these individuals (the secretary of an apartment building, an indie film-maker, a Catholic priest, a restaurant owner, and a film-star’s ex-boyfriend) are each dreaming up fantastic reprisals against the company and its boss, an advertising executive who calls himself Mister Happy Maker.
Meanwhile, Happy Maker is interested in ‘problem-solving’ the phenomena of their rage, by further finessing Shrine Tech, to achieve a more and more perfect personal and social exaltation. An enormous cult is in the making. Saionton has the choice of absorbing himself into Happy Maker’s plans, or getting out- if he can. But he isn’t unique. The same choice presents itself to everybody else, including Mandy, a broken-hearted woman in search of an identity, and Joachim, a priest whose faith is all too brittle.
Idolatry plunges the reader into the crucible of a society altering in strange and insane ways, in which a handful of (themselves disaffected and troubled) persons must learn to care as never before.
Featuring cover art by Broci.

Recenzii

"Poignant, fascinating, and wholly unique. Most of all, Sudarshan’s voice shines throughout. If you’re looking for a fresh take on the speculative genre with a heavy religious twist, Idolatry is the book for you!"

"Aditya Sudarshan has written a book that profoundly connects faith and technology."

"Thought-provoking... an educational and philosophical adventure into a weird world!"
