At the zone of intersection between imagery, law, and the economy, the defamatory image is charged with a particularly explosive significance. Initially used as a judicial means of punishing debtors and other violators of contracts, defamatory images remain a vehicle for the denunciation and pejorative depiction of lawbreakers.
