For the Middle Ages imitation can be regarded as an underestimated, highly complex cultural technique, whose potential lies not only in preserving traditions, but also in producing innovations. Through imitation it was possible to create individual and collective identities, to illustrate them or to differentiate oneself, as well as to organize and negotiate social processes.
