Notă biografică
James Howard Trott is co-editor with his wife, Roseann, of A Sacrifice of Praise: An Anthology of Christian Poetry in English from Caedmon to the Mid-Twentieth Century. That substantial book, published first in 1999 and in an expanded edition in 2006, was well-received, kindly reviewed, and even came to be used as a text in some college courses. This book, Immanence, is Trott's first major collection of his own poems. However, many these were first published in periodicals such as The Banner, Cornerstone, and Christianity and Literature. The poet has also seen two chapbooks into print: The Big Lights (New Hope International, England) and Prisoner's Pardons. Trott was born and raised in Montana, until he attended Harvard College, where he met his wife. Influential teachers there included William Alfred, Albert Gelpi, "Chaucer" Whiting, and Theodore Morrison. Trott's honors thesis was on oral song tradition among American cowboys. Disenchanted with Robert Frost and the modern novelists, Trott found more sympathy with the American Puritan poets, and the English "Metaphysicals". Emily Dickinson is among his favorite American poets. The geographies of Montana and New England, as well as the American attitudes which those regions present, are deeply imbedded in the poems of Immanence. Trott may be said to be a religious poet, although he claims there is no other kind. He expects both to seek and to find, although he may be found still seeking in many of his poems. Trott has made his living chiefly as a carpenter, with brief forays into auto mechanics and contract teaching. His diverse interests include edible mushrooms, wood turning, and Belizean Kriol - in which he often reads the "Nyoo Testiment". The poet lives with his wife and dog in Philadelphia, occasionally overrun by hoards of intelligent and beautiful grandchildren.
