Football inflicts an horrendous amount of tragic bodily injury. So it's likely that changing the game will happen eventually. The question is: When and in what way will it happen? This book proposes a process for making that change, a process that would maximize the chance of substantially reducing the occurrence of player injury, while retaining, or perhaps even enhancing, fan enjoyment of the game. Of course, there will be those who object to any change, not because a certain change isn't worthwhile but because they dislike change of any sort. And, also, there will be those who object to changing the game in a way that reduces player injury because they believe player injury is an inevitable byproduct of what makes the sport exciting. But this belief is unfounded. If we desire to have it, and go about it the right way, we can soon succeed at modifying the game of football in a way that results in a substantial reduction in player injury, while retaining, or perhaps even enhancing, fan enjoyment.
