All teachers dread "the call," the inevitable visit from Her Majesty's School Inspectorate. Everyone believes in raising school standards but schools have been tested to destruction in recent years. Teachers are becoming disillusioned and instead of helping to raise standards they have taken their eye off the ball in trying to second guess what Ofsted requirements are: Safeguarding, boys' falling standards, girls' falling standards, behaviour; whatever is the flavour of the month. Dave Storey is a bog standard, flawed but decent Year 6 teacher and deputy head fighting to keep his head above water. The last thing he needs now is a visit from the learning police. He is not about to see his hard earned career disappear. Teachers everywhere will identify with many of the issues raised in this short story and will cheer on the staff at St. Francis School.
