Inspirational Stories of the Homeless is a brilliant collection. It demonstrates compassion and love where we do not expect to find it, unyielding endurance, and growth of the human spirit. Martin Luther King once said: "Faith is taking the first step, even when you don't see the whole staircase." The homeless live in an abyss of uncertainty and the unknown. These are stories of the contents of people's character that deserve to be told; they are stories of dignity, nobility and decency. In the struggle of homelessness there is an endurance of spirituality, tenderness, generosity and joy. These stories are about that endurance. There is a preciousness of the compassion of the human spirit when it is within the midst of a dire brutality. Where else would it be needed more? When a homeless person is viewed it is assumed there is an issue with alcohol, drugs or criminality. It can be challenging for the spirit of those whose journey excludes the above mentioned cause and effects which creates another problem in addition to the immeasurable obstacles inherent in the situation. Even more challenging is the countless programs designed for those whose challenges are alcohol, drugs or criminality to the detrimental exclusion of those who experience a different journey. This is particularly striking within the Veterans Affairs System where the concept of honor would exclude these causes and effects. Dignity, nobility, and decency creates honor. These are stories of honor from the hearts of those with no-where to live.
