Internal Fixation in Osteoporotic Bone

Editat de Yuehuei H. An
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 3 sep 2002
Osteoporosis affects over 28 million people in the United States alone, with an estimated annual cost of $14 billion. As the general population continues to age, this figure will dramatically increase--especially as internal fixation techniques are applied to fractures or osteotomies of osteoporotic bone. Here is the first book to provide a thorough overview of this burgeoning field. Comprehensive, clearly organized, and fully referenced, it is valuable for all specialists. The book is divided into six sections starting with basic science and current techniques, and then going on to new clinical applications and evolving concepts. It covers topics such as: biomechanics of osteoporotic bone; imaging and densitometry; cement augmentation of fixation devices; interlocking screws; bioabsorbable implants; self-guided pedicle screws; and much more! The text is simple and straightforward, with hundreds of diagrams, tables, line drawings, and photographs to clarify each concept. Key features of INTERNAL FIXATION IN OSTEOPOROTIC BONE: --Full coverage of the latest surgical treatment methods for osteoporotic bone, including the use of screws, plates, intramedullary nails, and other fixation devices --Detailed analysis of new concepts as they evolve from in-vitro tests to clinical applications --Chapters written in a concise format, leading directly to the essential information you need --Valuable contributions by leading worldwide specialists, providing both AO and non-AO techniques Nearly 500 illustrations, many original drawings by the editor, facilitate understanding of the material

Osteoporosis affects 28 million people in the United States alone. The need for stable internal fixation of this type of bone is paramount. Metabolic bone diseases, such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, hyperparathyroidism, and Paget's disease, are usually associated with osteoporotic or soft skeleton, especially in the elderly patient. Orthopedic procedures in elderly patients are costly and with the increasing age of the population these costs will continue to escalate. Great challenges are often encountered when internal fixation is needed for fractures or osteotomies in osteoporotic bone.
This book is designed to present both current clinical techniques and cutting-edge knowledge in pre-clinical research on the internal fixation of osteoporotic bone.

Here is the first book to provide a thorough overview of internal fixation techniques in osteoporotic bone. Addressing both current practices and developing applications, it covers topics such as: biomechanics of osteoporotic bone; imaging and densitometry; cement augmentation of fixation devices; bioabsorbable implants; self-guided pedicle screws; and much more! Hundreds of illustrations clarify each concept.
