There simply are no other textbooks worth using! I can't think of any that cover development studies so thoroughly. In my mind, the book stands out partly for its breadth and clear organization of that range of material, and also in being thoroughly rooted in the tradition of critical development studies, but without being polemical and while also giving adequate and respectful space to more mainstream approaches and ideas."

Paul Haslam is a professor in the School of International Development and Global Studies, University of Ottawa. Jessica Schafer was an assistant professor at the International Development and Globalization program at the University of Ottawa from 2006-2008. She is currently manager of performance audit at the Office of the Auditor General of British Columbia. Pierre Beaudet is an associate professor in the Department of Social Sciences, Université du Québec en Outaouais.
