Bainbridge Island, Washington has a rich farming history. Japanese farmers planted the first strawberry fields in the early 1900s and soon after the island became world famous for their strawberries. World War II marked a major shift in the small island's landscape as the Japanese community of Bainbridge Island were the first in the country to be evacuated and sent to internment camps. In the spirit of bayanihan - communal unity - many Filipinos cared for the Japanese farms while they were interned.
