Because Mary had a loving, compassionate nature she knew that she could do a great deal of good with her money. She believed that many destitute families could be helped by allowing them a small amount of capital to get them started on a profitable venture. In this way she was able to rescue many of the local families and lift them out of the poverty trap.Mary's father had always taught her to think 'outside of the box' and to use her intellectual powers to the full. She continually flouted convention, introduced startling new ideas and often shocked her workers. Mary treated all her servants as equals and considered them her friends.Mary's compassion reached a peak when Jacob, a physically handicapped young man, arrived at Primrose Hill. This meeting, dramatically altered forever the quality of Jacob's life, as he started to 'climb his ladder'.
