This is the tale of an African slave named Sabra who arrived in Colonial Virginia, at Point Comfort (Hampton Virginia) in 1619 aboard the "White Lion"; a ship carrying a cargo consisting of himself and twenty-thirty other Africans. This group is thought to be the first recorded Africans in the English colonies.
The story is set in1679 when Sabra is an old man. Sabra tries desperately to leverage any bit of power that he has, to protect the people around him. He makes it his mission to guide a young slave boy named Daniel who is like a grandson to him.
Sabra helps Daniel to navigate in his difficult world and to take a mystical journey in which the boy comes to understand his own power and the true meaning of freedom.
