Jasper

Autor Malcolm G. Pate
en Limba Engleză Paperback
"Jasper" is an original horror story about a mysterious evil presence that resided in an ancient toxic dump. The characters appear real and my readers may enjoy being involved in their horrific experiences. Hayswood was a quiet, dusty town at the edge of the Kansas desert, much like many other small American towns. The town which used to bustle with activity, as the people who lived there bought this and that at the many stores along Main Street, was now a shadowy frightening place. Ronald's bar was a favourite hangout of those who thought they were better than the rest. The dilapidated old Aircraft factory, which dominated the landscape at the edge of town, had an evil reputation and was a place to avoid during the hours of darkness. The town had been a quiet, forgotten backwater until the KLD came and the killings started. The main storyline starts in Kansas in the mid nineteen fifties, with the birth of a boy child in a dilapidated old barn. Two women from the State Children's Service League are there to take the child away as soon as it is born. Both the women and the midwife are murdered by the child's father as soon as the child is born. The child is called Wayne Shrank, who becomes a psychopath and whose job it is, like his father before him, to feed the evil entity that exists in the ancient toxic dump. Wayne calls the entity "Jasper" and has to get the meat to feed it by committing several gruesome murders and also by some grave robbing. Wayne has no conscience and lives in a dilapidated farm house above the small town of Hayswood. He then meets Maria who assists him in his gruesome occupation. No one knows how old the dump is, but it was there well before the American Indians roamed the prairies. Rumours abounded that several confederate soldiers' bodies were dumped in there during the American Civil war and it is said that their ghosts can still be seen roaming the area during the night. The situation deteriorates when Kansas Land developments get the contract to do major works in the area. This contract involves laying water pipes across the desert, creating a large lake and building a hydro-electric dam. As the work progresses, it affects the level of the water table, which releases the evil entity into the local water supply from the dump. At the edge of town is an old dilapidated aircraft factory, which used to produce fighter planes during the war. It had recently been bought by Jake Lucas to make crop spraying aircraft. The factory had partly collapsed into lime caverns which lay under it. The evil entity manifests itself in these large cellars and caves. Kansas Land Developments also has tremendous problems whilst working in the ancient Indian burial grounds. Unfortunately, while collecting rock and soil samples from one of these areas, two of their senior employees have a horrific supernatural experience, which costs them their lives. Several other employees meet a grizzly end, which results in Jack Middle the hard-nosed owner of KLD, calling in their trouble shooter Marcus Lea, to sort out the problems. Marcus sees for himself the supernatural problems and after much argument, manages to persuade the Catholic Bishop, to conduct an exorcism at the desert pipe laying site. The main hero is James Brooks, a talented young FBI agent, who is sent to Hayswood to investigate the various disappearances and murders. James has marital problems and consoles himself by playing his clarinet in the local jazz band and bedding Jane, another member of the band. They think they have solved the problem, when they arrange a large pumping operation at the dam and the old aircraft factory, but have they
