In The Schoolhouse Dog, everyone works together to find a solution when Jeremiah, the teacher's new dog, won't stay on his leash and creates havoc for the farmers on the prairie fields. The students are excited when they meet Jeremiah, the teacher's new dog, on their first day of school. Jeremiah is excited too, but feels lonely when the students go in for school and howls all day. The students convince Miss Kelly, the teacher, to let Jeremiah into the school and everyone is happy, except the parents. Jeremiah is put back on his leash after the parents complain, but he manages to escape and runs off to discover life on the prairie fields. Jeremiah is happy chasing the gophers, cows, and pigs, but the farmers are mad. At the school's fall picnic, Jeremiah saves the day by chasing Farmer Brett's cows back home after they plod over a broken-down fence. While the students prepare a special surprise for Jeremiah, the parents work together to build him a home.
