Over a century ago, Joseph Jacobs began collecting the first set of English fairy tales, in response to a then popular feeling that "there were no English fairy tales." - "English Folk and Fairy Tales," the first in a series of 6 books by Joseph Jacobs, was published in 1890 with early variations of tales such as Cinderella, Three Little Pigs, and Henny-Penny. This edition contains all 43 of the original stories and all 68 of the original John D. Batten illustrations. - Popular demand led to a second book in 1894, More English Folk and Fairy Tales, with tales such as The Pied Piper, The Three Wishes, and the original Goldilocks. This edition contains all 44 of the original stories and all 52 of Batten's original illustrations. - In 1912 Joseph Jacobs published, "Indian Folk and Fairy Tales," from mystic, far-off India-land of the Hindus. He has compiled legends and tales that have entertained the young people of India for more than a thousand years, with tales such as: The Gold-giving Serpent, Pride Goeth Before a Fall, and The Prince and the Fakir. This edition contains all 29 of the original stories, all 49 of Batten's illustrations, and all 30 letter-blocks.
