Journey of a Painting

Autor Ray Smith
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 21 feb 2020
A famous painting by The Italian Master, Canaletto, is stolen by The Nazis from a Jewish family in Poland. The turmoil of war forces Hitler and his henchmen to move this and other works of art continuously from place to place in their bid to evade their discovery. These hectic 'removals' take in secret hiding places across poland, Germany and Austria. Years later The Government of Poland seeks to have the painting tracked down and returned to Poland as part of its natural heritage to which it rightfully belongs. Tom Blake, a businessman based in Algiers is tasked with tracking down the masterpiece and organising its return to Poland. The twists and turns of his adventure in doing so bring him Love as well as exposing him to situations of great danger. Nevertheless the narrative paints an intriguing picture of German Nationalism during the wartime years, which some say still lurks beneath the veneer of a modern democracy.

Notă biografică

Ed Westcott was my friend. I met him late in his life and for most of the time I knew him he was restricted by a stroke and unable to speak. Yet, his mind was clear and he could remember well. He and I communicated by phone as he was better able to speak when he was not in the presence of the people with whom he was attempting communicate. He autographed photos for me to sell in charity auctions. He showed me 16 mm film he had made of him getting into a helicopter to take aerial photographs of Oak Ridge and of him climbing the water tower on Pine Ridge from where he made the iconic panoramic image of Oak Ridge. From that film, i was able to digitize enough to form the basis of a documentary film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYvzw9f8M8A The Historically Speaking columns written about Ed Westcott are all included in this book, Ed Westcott - Photographer.
