July

Autor Kathleen Ossip
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 16 iun 2021
JULY's three sections are concerned not just with a mother-daughter relationship, but with today's political divides and issues. The first section, Occasions, is a collection of individual poems that react to subjects at hand: beauty, boredom, feminism, family life, travel, relationships, inspiration, and despair. The second section, July, is a long diary poem set in July 2016; it recounts a mother-daughter road trip from northern Minnesota to Key West, Florida during a summer of violence, natural beauty, and political chaos. The book comes to a close with The Goddess, a sequence composed of sonnet-like rhyming poems. It begins on Election Night 2016; reading Dante's Paradiso, the speaker tries to imagine a contemporary Paradise and apotheosizes into a contemporary goddess who, with her "broad-spectrum view," spans the country and tries to justify the human desire for hope.
