Kaleidoscope: Stories of the American Experience

Editat de Barbara Perkins, George Perkins
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 21 apr 1993
This innovative multicultural reader gathers together diaries, histories, autobiographies, short stories, and excerpts from novels to bring the many facets of the American experience to life, from sixteenth-century explorations to this century's ongoing saga of immigration and acculturation.
Extending the traditional boundaries of the American literary canon, the editors first offer a comprehensive overview of the history of multicultural social and literary patterns in the United States, and then present a wealth of richly diverse stories--construing that term in the broadest possible
sense--from both celebrated and lesser-known authors emphasizing pluralistic experience. Whenever possible, they present narratives of cross-cultural contact and exchange, rather than reports of cultures observed in isolation. Offering a uniquely broad range of readings within a strong thematic
structure, Kaleidoscope is an enjoyable and enlightening reader for anyone interested in American literature and history, or the new emphasis on multiculturalism.

Descriere

Kaleidoscope, compiled by one of the most experienced textbook teams in the country, is an innovative collection of American stories, intended for two primary applications in college and university classes: firstly, as a reader for courses in composition and, secondly, as a fiction anthology for use in "Introduction to Literature" courses, the dimensions of which have recently been changing in new and exciting ways. Using as their thematic focus the question "Whatdo stories tell us about the diversity of Americans?", Barbara and George Perkins balance stories by writers long excluded from the canon with those considered to belong to the mainsteam. The expansion of the American literary canon has become commonplace in any discussion of literary studies; thepresent collection reflects this expansion by including not only stories that have heretofore been considered outside the fiction genre, but also cultural documents that provide insight into our country's multicultural heritage.
