There have been substantial changes within the historiography of the Enlightenment era in recent years, especially in seeing its religious roots. These changes happened concurrently with the so-called "turn to the religious" in the academy, particularly through the impact and appropriation of continental philosophy. Karl Barth and the Study of the Religious Enlightenment analyzes the intellectual history of the eighteenth century provided by Karl Barth, most notably in his groundbreaking study of the eighteenth and nineteenth century philosophical traditions in Protestant Theology in the Nineteenth Century. Here, Barth anticipates the recent scholarship on the religious roots, impact, and significance of the Enlightenment. Barth's historical account underscores the nature of the Enlightenment era as a time and movement of religious reform, foreshadowing the later and now current challenges to the secularization paradigm. This volume seeks to establish, through study of Barth's historical method, a new vantage point through which to understand not only the wider shape of Barth's work itself but also Barth's standing and contribution to public intellectual scholarship.
