After a young life being passed from relative to relative, suffering varying degrees of abuse after her mother left them, Amy and her brother finally got a new step-mother.

She turned out to be a woman who made the young Amy pay for her toiletries and clothes out of her pocket money and meted out cruelty to both children in many different ways. At nine, any hope that her mother would come back for her was dashed with the news that she had taken her own life.
