This book presents cinema in Austria as a company at the interface between economy and culture and deals with its development chronologically based on the three historical epochs "cinema boom", "cinema death" and "cinema renaissance" that shaped the history of cinema after 1945. The history of cinema in Austria after the Second World War can be divided into three major chronological blocks. During the "cinema boom" from the end of the war until the late 1950s, the cinemas, as the sole medium for moving images, participated in the economic boom of the Second Republic and attracted masses of visitors. The phase of cinema dying followed: television, extended leisure activities and increased individual mobility led to a dramatic drop in the number of visitors. The number of cinema locations fell from more than 1,200 to just under 150 in just a few years. Fortunately, however, we have been able to speak of a cinema renaissance for a number of years. Based on previously unpublished material, the author also examines topics such as how cinemas deal with "Aryanization" and "denazification", cinema tickets, admission prices, programs and programming, or discusses the legal and technical framework of cinema operations over the course of time.
