How did the church serve the territorial lord both in a denominational and territory-political way? How were the different administrative levels of the land and church linked to one another? How did they communicate? How was the local territorial rule conveyed by the clergy and how did they contribute to foster territorial identity in times of uncertain rulership? Based on the journals of three reformed superintendents of the landgraviate Hessen-Kassel, the author examines the situation in numerous detailed studies during a time when the dynastic and confessional quarrels with the Lutheran landgraviate Hessen-Darmstadt endangered the independence of the landgraviate Hessen-Kassel.
