In Belfast in 1907, Maggie Pierce's family have disowned her, following her marriage to Catholic sweetheart Paul Mason. Their happiness is crowned by the birth of daughter Sarah. When tragedy strikes, Maggie finds herself penniless with a baby to support, in a suddenly harsh and uncaring world.
