Let's Get the Rats Out!

Autor MR Dean Borok
en Limba Engleză Paperback
"Let's Get The Rats Out" is a wacky roller coaster ride of jokes, gags and short essays presented in bite-size pieces of one to five pages long. Although the inspiration for these pieces is the classic comedy writing of nineteen-fifties authors such as Art Buchwald, Mac Hyman ("No Time For Sergeants"), Harry Golden ("For 2cents Plain") and William Peter Blatty, the subject matter deals with 21st century issues and is written in a 21st century language that would have gotten those writers arrested. The themes are wildly diverse, covering popular culture, politics, pro sports and consumerism. In one bit, for example, The Three Stooges perform hip-hop music at the Apollo Theater, trying to win the amateur prize so they can cover their rent. Nobody is let off the hook. Madonna describes to her friend Sandra Bernhardt how she tried to convert the Pope to Judaism, with the Pope telling her, "At my age, there's nothing left to circumcise." The Pope makes an encore appearance later on in the book when he shows up at Yankee Stadium to advise the Yanks that they might have better luck in the playoffs if they kneeled and prayed while they were waiting to bat in the on-deck circle. In "The Yankees Army," an enraged mob of Yankee fans descends upon Shea Stadium with pitchforks and torches, only to find the Mets fans committing mass suicide, like lemmings, by jumping off the upper decks and splattering onto the field like bloated water balloons. Barack Obama is satirized in an updated version of Othello, with Rahm Emanuel, in the role of Iago, whispering in his ear that he is being deceived by his paramour, Hillary Clinton. The drama ends with a double suicide aboard Air Force One, and a closing speech by Joe Biden, in the role of Friar Lawrence from Romeo and Juliet, solemnly intoning, "Barack, you did a fucking beautiful thing " One bit takes place in Sing Sing Penitentiary, where the members of the prison literary society give their take on classic literature such as Gibbons' "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" ("You don't fuck with the Italians") and Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables" ("I ain't against extortion if it's for a good cause, but anybody who fucks with little kids oughta be shot "). In "The Blues Brothers in Washington," the Republican Blues Brothers, Bush and Cheney Blues, throw a rocking "Mission Accomplished" concert on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ronald Reagan, with Colin Powell dressed in white tails singing "Minnie the Moocher," and then cause a hundred car pile-up racing back to the White House to sign the tax cut bill before midnight, or else all the little millionaires will be thrown out onto the street. They are almost blown up by the Mysterious Woman in Red, who turns out to be Times reporter Judith Miller, who is on a murderous rampage after being unceremoniously dumped by Blues Brother Scooter Libby. The last chapter describes the U.S. Navy ceremony held for Osama bin Ladin's funeral at sea, as conceived by the author. The volume contains close to a hundred of these gags, covering more than 300 pages. The author, Dean Borok, is the winner of the New York Magazine Political Fictions literary competition for his satirical piece "A Wall Street Christmas Carol" (also included in the collection), and is a nephew of Nobel Prize-winning author Saul Bello
