In May 1940 Panzer columns overran France. Many of it's citizens wept at the debacle brought about by their government and it's inept military leaders. Following the defection of the cabinet from Paris, the writing was clearly on the wall. It had taken only five weeks for the 'Blitzkrieg' to overwhelm the vaunted French forces.
