Letters, Fictions, Lives: Henry James and William Dean Howells

Editat de Michael Anesko
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 29 oct 1997
This volume attempts to determine the early influence shared between William Dean Howells and Henry James by reconstructing and evaluating documentary evidence of their literary cross-fertilization. Of the 151 letters included in this volume -- most of the extant correspondence between the two men -- only half have been printed elsewhere. All items previously unpublished are letters by James. The selection represents each writer's most significant criticism of the other, providing a valuable tool for historically informed comprehension and appreciation of both men's work.

Recenzii

a book that will simply be indispensable for scholars of American literature ... Anesko organizes his plot with great flair: there are births, marriages and deaths in abundance, some insanity, scheming publishers, failures and successes galore.
The complex and shifting economic and literary co-ordinates of the 151 letters that comprise Michael Anesko's magnificent edition of the Howells-James correspondence make fascinating reading ... Anesko traces with impeccable scholarship (background essays, published materials by one on the other, annotations and textual notes) an unusual but enduring epistolary relationship.
