This is an impressive book by Kentucky Heritage Artist Robert A. Powell that contains images of Lexington's heritage over the past 200 plus years. Most of the subjects are landmarks today, and even the few that are more current have a noted history attached. A very few are only memories today, most can still be seen very much as depicted by Powell in his unique pen & ink style that has long made him a favorite at interpreting subjects of Kentucky's fascinating history. He introduces the interesting collection with a brief look at the founding of what quickly became the "Athens of the West" and has remained a prestigious cultural center in the heart of the Bluegrass for more than two centuries. Each of the subjects is accompanied by a one-page description of the subject and its historical significance; especially to the heritage of Lexington. After an overall diverse array of images that represent nearly every aspect of Lexington and her culture, Powell wraps up his book with a brief essay on how the county itself evolved; an interesting story of its own.
