Recenzii
“This is a valuable volume that addresses the importance of liberal education and the challenges to it. From reflections on the classical meaning of liberal education, to the promises and perils of technology and the sciences, to curriculum issues within the modern academy, this book has something important to contribute.”—Khalil M. Habib, Hillsdale College, coeditor of The Soul of Statesmanship: Shakespeare on Nature, Virtue, and Political Wisdom
“Liberal Education and Citizenship in a Free Society is a tour de force of why liberal arts education is central to freedom and a roadmap of how to rebuild culture through education. Ideas have consequences. By putting together the best examples of liberal arts education with examples of how to practice it, not just educators but all Americans will benefit from reading this book. Leisure, character and knowledge are all interwoven together masterfully throughout the chapters.”—Margarita Mooney Clayton, Princeton Theological Seminary and Scala Foundation. Author of The Love of Learning: Seven Dialogues on the Liberal Arts
“What a true liberal education is and how (or if) it contributes to good citizenship are timeless questions. In this timely volume, Professors Dyer and Vassiliou have collected essays by an extraordinary group of scholars.”—Vincent Phillip Muñoz, University of Notre Dame, author of Religious Liberty and the American Founding: Natural Rights and the Original Meanings of the First Amendment Religion Clauses
"A seminal and groundbreaking collection of astute, eloquent, insightfully informative, thoughtful, thought-provoking, and exceptionally well organized and presented contributions by experts in the field of Constitutional Democracy."—Midwest Book Review

Last month, Justin took on the roles of Professor of Government and Executive Director of the newly formed Civitas Institute at the University of Texas at Austin. Constantine Vassiliou is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Houston. A political theorist who specializes in Enlightenment thought, Vassiliou’s research points to a perennial civic challenge, that of trying to balance commercial considerations with the public interest. His upcoming project, “Montesquieu and the Scottish Enlightenment: Liberty and Honor in the Modern Commercial World,” examines the competing theories of honor of Montesquieu, David Hume, Adam Smith, and Adam Ferguson to bring to light a strand of foundational liberal thought that emphasizes the emotional basis of political life.
