Throughout history some areas have been less attractive for habitation and agriculture than others. These marginal zones are created by inconvenient environmental, social and economic factors such as an uncomfortable climate or remoteness from population centres. These papers attempt to sort out the catchall of marginality, wading into the determinism debate, and questioning whether archaeology competently can investigate the issue.
