A navy kid, Chaney at three years-old experienced her first deployment when her dad deployed for seven months to the Middle East. In an attempt to remember the funny and many times shocking things that Chaney said and did so that she could share them with her husband on the rare times he was able to call home, the author---Chaney's mom--- began writing them down in a journal she received as a birthday gift. Well after the deployment was over, Chaney continued to say and do funny things and her mom continued to document them in what became known around the home as the "Book of Chaneyisms."
